Building New Connections
The project is composed of two key components.
- New Build Segment – A new double-circuit 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line stretching about 210–225 miles will link the Afton Substation near Las Cruces, New Mexico, with the Apache Substation near Willcox, Arizona. This entirely new corridor will create fresh capacity to move electricity efficiently across state lines.
- Upgrade Segment – Between Apache and the Vail Substation near Tucson, approximately 60–64 miles of existing 115-kV Western Area Power Administration lines will be upgraded to 230-kV or higher, effectively modernizing a vital section of the regional grid.
These improvements will be supported by expansions or modifications at existing substations and possibly the creation of a new interconnection point, ensuring that the upgraded system can seamlessly integrate with surrounding energy infrastructure.
Driving Reliability and Renewable Growth
The Southline project aims to add up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. This added capacity will relieve existing bottlenecks, giving utilities and power providers more flexibility to move electricity where it’s needed most. By alleviating congestion, the line helps stabilize voltage levels, reduce the risk of outages, and accommodate the Desert Southwest’s rapid population and economic growth.

This is a 345 KV major utility line that will be harnessed on 185′ tall stands spanning across the desert from Tucson to Las Cruces. Economically impossible to put underground. Interesting project. Thanks for responding.
